Blasting

Back to clean steel

Blasting is where a coating job is won. We take the surface back to clean, profiled metal. Old paint, rust, mill scale and weld residue all come off, so the new system has something solid to hold onto. On new build we blast the sections once the welding is complete and carry them straight through to primer.

What we do

Everything between bare metal and finished paint

Our own team covers the whole sequence, from the first blast to the final coat. Nothing is handed to an outside contractor halfway through, so responsibility never gets divided.

01 · Preparation

Blasting and sanding

Stripping the surface back to sound, profiled substrate. Every coat above it depends on this one.

  • Abrasive blasting to specification
  • Post-weld blasting on new build
  • Sweep blasting and profiling
  • Machine and hand sanding
  • Antifouling removal
  • Masking, containment, clean-down
02 · Fairing

Filler and long-boarding

Where the shape is made. Filler applied and boarded back by hand until the surface is flat to a straight edge.

  • Epoxy filler application
  • Long-board fairing by hand
  • High-build surfacer
  • Grit sequence to P400
  • Edge, corner and radius work
  • Spot repair and blending
03 · Coatings

Primer to topcoat

The full system sprayed in sequence and in the right conditions by our own coatings team, working to the specification agreed at survey.

  • Primer and barrier systems
  • Topcoat spraying and refinishing
  • Antifouling application
  • Boot top and cove line
  • Superstructure, deck and hardware
  • Tanks, voids and interior spaces

What we coat

From the keel to the mast head

Four zones, four coating systems, four different sets of problems. We work on all of them and quote them separately, so you can see where the money goes.

WATERLINE
Superstructure

Deckhouse, mast and rails. Fine finish work, tight masking, the most visible surfaces on the vessel.

Topsides

The long flat sides above the waterline, where fairing decides whether the reflection runs straight.

Boot top

The stripe at the waterline. Narrow, geometric and unforgiving, and everyone notices when it wanders.

Below waterline

Antifouling removal, blast, barrier system and fresh antifoul. Nobody sees it and everything depends on it.

The build-up

A full topside system, layer by layer

This is the complete build for a topside repaint. Not every vessel needs every layer. The system is chosen for the substrate, the condition of the surface and the specification, and we tell you which layers your hull needs after the survey. Pick a layer to see what it does.

Layers and thicknesses vary by vessel and specification

Why KVH

What you get that you don't get everywhere

Coatings contractors are easy to find. Contractors that finish on the agreed date, to the agreed standard, with no surprises in between are not.

01

Specialists at every stage

Blasting, fairing and spraying are three different trades, and each is staffed by people who do that work every day. All of them are ours. No second contractor inherits somebody else's preparation, and there is never an argument about who puts it right.

02

Two decades in the trade

Our people learned this trade on working ships and yachts across Europe. That shows up in the details: edges, radiuses, cut lines and the parts of a hull where inexperience is obvious to anyone who knows what to look for.

03

We travel with our own team

We arrive with our own team, wherever the vessel is. No local hiring, no unfamiliar hands on your customer's hull, and no waiting while somebody assembles a team around your dates.

04

Documentation when you need it

Where the specification calls for it we record application conditions and take dry film thickness readings, handed over on completion for your warranty file. Ask at quote stage and it's built into the price.
